The United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2025 is now accepting applications. This fully-funded fellowship lasts 9 months and is divided into two phases. In the first 3 months, fellows will be based at the UN Headquarters in New York. The remaining 6 months will be spent at a prestigious host institution around the world for advanced academic research and study.Host Institutions of the UN Nippon Fellowship available in Europe, the USA, Australia, Asia, Canada, and other countries.
The UN Nippon Foundation Fellowship trains government officials and mid-level professionals from developing countries in ocean affairs, maritime law, and allied subjects such as marine science. This programme will teach fellows about international legal frameworks, significant concerns, and best practices in ocean affairs, as well as the activities of the United Nations. How UN Nippon Foundation Fellowship will Work out?
Because the United Nations' headquarters are in New York, fellows will spend the first three months there conducting research and training, as well as developing professional skills. Later, the next six months will be spent at the designated host institution, gaining in-depth knowledge. UNNF fellows are hosted by a total of 32 institutions worldwide.
- Phase One: Three months of research and training at DOALOS, United Nations Headquarters in New York, from March/April to June.
- Phase Two: 6-month Advanced Academic Research and Study at one of the host institutions, from July to December.
In return, it is expected that the fellows to provide:
- A 100-page written thesis
- A presentation of the research
- An ocean governance matrix

Eligibility Criteria:
- Age between 25 and 40 years
- Have completed a first university degree
- Work as a government official or mid-level professional in a government or non-government agency
- Come from a developing country
- Have an interest in the topics covered by the UN Nippon Foundation fellowship
