The 2025 MEXT Scholarship by the Government of Japan is now open for international students to study at the University of Tokyo. This scholarship is fully funded, covering tuition fees and providing an annual stipend of ¥1,774,000 (about $11,328).

Japan Government MEXT Scholarship Details:
Applications are now open for the University of Tokyo's University Recommended Japan Government MEXT Scholarship for the 2024/2025 academic year.

The University of Tokyo, also known as Todai, is Japan's top-ranked university and offers many programs in English, mainly at the graduate level.

For the MEXT Scholarship with University Recommendation, each Japanese university conducts a preliminary selection and recommends candidates to MEXT. All interested applicants should first contact the university or graduate school where they want to study.

Japan Government MEXT Scholarship Requirements:

To be eligible for the MEXT Scholarships, you need to:

  1. Be an international student with an excellent academic record.
  2. Have graduated from your latest degree program with a final GPA of 2.30 or higher, or if you're currently a student, have a GPA of 2.30 or higher in your current courses. You must maintain this academic standard during the scholarship.
  3. Meet the English language proficiency requirements.
  4. Have the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.
  5. Be born on or after April 2, 1990

Japan Government MEXT Scholarship Duration and Benefits

  • Tuition and Enrollment Fees: Waived.
  • Monthly Allowance:
    • ¥144,000 per month for Master's students.
    • ¥145,000 per month for Doctoral students.
    • Additional monthly stipend of ¥2,000 or ¥3,000 for students studying in certain designated regions.
    • Travel Allowance: An economy class air ticket will be provided from the nearest international airport to your residence, according to the itinerary specified by MEXT. Return tickets are also provided if the student returns to their home country within the final month of the scholarship period.
  • Duration:
    • Master’s Program: October 2025 – September 2027 (2 years).
    • Doctoral Program: October 2025 – September 2028 (3 years).

Required Documents for Japan Government MEXT Scholarship 2025

To apply, you need to submit the following:

  1. Application Form.
  2. Field of Study and Research Plan.
  3. Letter of Recommendation.
  4. Official transcript from the last university attended (undergraduate or graduate level).
    • If currently enrolled in a university, submit the official transcript of the last degree completed (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD), as well as the transcript of your current program.
  5. Recent passport-sized photo (4.5 x 3.5 cm, upper-body, full-face, no cap).
  6. Proof of language proficiency.
  7. Abstract of your graduation thesis.
  8. Official statement of (expected) graduation from the last university attended.
  9. A copy of your passport (page with photo).
